CESME is located 80 km west of the third largest city of TURKEY, IZMİR thru Izmir-Cesme highway. As of 2000 census the population of Cesme is 37,372. Due its popularity, the population rises much in the summer. Many coves and sandy beaches let people swim on the wavy shores of Cesme. There are houses, hotels, motels, pensions along the shores from Alacati to Ildir at the south.

The ancient city Erythrai which is located 15 km northeast of Ilica beach is today situated inside the Ildir village. According to Pausanias, the town was founded by Cretans in B.C. 3000. In the first ages, Eryhtrai was one of 12 Ionian cities (Samos, Khios, Miletos, Priene, Ephesus, Teos, Erythrai, Priena, Klazomenai, Lebedos, Phokaia, Colophon and Smyrna) and Cyssus (Cesme) was port of Erythrai. Erythrai was the second biggest city after Ephesus. The tyranny was dominant in 7'th century B.C. Later the town was sovereigned by Lydians in 560 B.C. It was ruled by Persians till Alexander Great set them free in 334 B.C. Erythrai was an independent town of Asia in Roman period. It was surrounded by a rampart, which has many doors and a beautiful stone masonry. The temple of Athens and theatre dating back the second half of the 7'th century B.C. were found in the excavations.

Alacati is a lovely town around Çeşme with its little harbour, streets, houses and lively bazaar. It is one of the world's favourable places for surfing. Being 7 km away from Çeşme, Alacati has its combined architecture of Turkish and Greek by rough cobblestone pavements, over one hundred year old windmills and mastic trees. Alacati natural harbour is one of the rarest and famous places in the World for surfing since the sea is very smooth and windy. The wind flows from north at 15-25 knots during summer. The surfers come from all over the world in the windy season from October to May. The depth is not more than 1.5 m, for that reason it is a suitable training area for beginners. It helps both professionals and beginners. There are numerous surfing schools where you can rent and  learn.
